Gentle Potty Training

A calm 3-day starter plan, a printable reward chart idea, and honest troubleshooting — because most 'potty training in 3 days!' promises are a bit of a stretch.

Signs they're ready

Look for 3–4 of these. Age matters less than readiness — anywhere from 2 to 3.5 is normal.

  • Dry for 2 hours at a stretch during the day
  • Tells you (or hides) when they're doing a wee or a poo
  • Can pull trousers up and down with a bit of help
  • Curious about the toilet or a potty
  • Understands simple 2-step instructions
  • Nappy is dry after most naps

Day 1Nappies off, potty on

  • Nappy off the second they wake up. Bare-bottomed or loose trousers, no pants.
  • Potty in the main room, not the bathroom. Somewhere they can get to fast.
  • Offer the potty every 20 min. Sit for 1 minute, sing a short song, then move on.
  • Drinks flowing all day. More wees = more chances to practise.
  • Accidents will happen. Say 'wee goes in the potty, let's try next time.' No shame, no big deal.
  • One tick on the chart for every sit — not just the successes.

Day 2Same again, but calmer

  • Stretch the reminders to every 30–40 min.
  • Take the potty to the garden or the kitchen — wherever you're going.
  • Start noticing the pre-wee wiggle. Point it out gently ('shall we try the potty?').
  • Add a story on the potty. Long sits without pressure.
  • One short trip out with the potty in the boot.

Day 3Trousers on, out into the world

  • Loose trousers, no pants underneath (pants feel like nappies to a lot of toddlers).
  • Longer gaps between prompts. They start telling you.
  • First proper trip out: 30–45 min, potty in the car, wee before you leave.
  • Poos usually take longer to click than wees. That's normal — keep offering, no pressure.

Reward chart ideas that don't backfire

  • Sticker for every sit (not just every success)
  • 5 stickers = choose the bedtime story
  • 10 stickers = pick what's for pudding
  • A special 'big kid' pants-choosing trip
  • A high-five and a specific 'I saw you try that' — often the best reward

When it isn't going smoothly

  • Won't sit on the potty at all

Try: Move it somewhere fun. Read a book on it fully clothed for a few days. Take the pressure off.

  • Wees fine, holds poos

Try: Really common. Offer a pull-up just for poos for a couple of weeks, sit them on the potty wearing it. Slowly cut a hole in the pull-up, then drop it.

  • Regression after starting nursery / new baby

Try: Go back to basics for a week. It's not lost progress, it's a big feeling. Extra cuddles, fewer prompts.

  • Accidents 2 weeks in

Try: Totally normal until 6+ months in. They're probably too busy playing. A gentle reminder every hour is fine.

  • Night wees

Try: Night dryness is a separate hormone thing — can take up to age 6+ and it's not something you train. Nappies at night are fine for as long as they need them.
